Elephants get by on little sleep. But is it really only two hours?

Sleep is one of the most enigmatic behaviors in the animal kingdom. All mammals sleep, yet sleep patterns differ greatly among species: from mice that sleep many hours a day, through humans who need about eight hours, to large mammals that make do with very little sleep [1].

In mammals, sleep supports vital processes such as metabolism, memory, tissue repair, and immune activity. Even so, environmental factors, such as predation risk and food availability, shape sleep patterns. Large mammals, which are less threatened by predators, can “afford” more flexible sleep strategies, but this does not necessarily mean more sleep.

The African elephant is a fascinating example. Because its sleep patterns are hard to study in the wild, research so far has been conducted only on a very small number of individuals. A 2017 field study that tracked two wild matriarchs reported a total sleep time of about two hours per day, most of it light sleep while standing [2]. By contrast, a 2023 study of nine elephants in a semi-captive environment in South Africa—a nature reserve where they spend the night in a fenced area—found an average lying time of about one to two hours per night, with large individual variation [3].

In 2025, the organization Save the Elephants began a long-term study [4] that tracks wild elephant herds in Kenya using drones equipped with infrared cameras. The findings so far show that elephants lie down to rest or sleep for roughly two and a half hours per night, mainly between midnight and 3AM, and that they rest while standing for an additional two and a half hours during the day [5].

REM sleep—the stage in which we dream and that is also linked to memory processing—can occur only while lying down, because muscle tone is low and cannot support standing. It is therefore more limited under natural conditions. Elephants lie down, sometimes the entire herd together, only when they feel safe. Calves spend more time sleeping while lying, often beneath their mothers for protection. If threatened, they may forgo lying down and REM sleep for that night.

According to the 2020 husbandry guidelines of the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA) for elephants [6], their sleep patterns, including lying time, sleep duration, and side preference, should be monitored to ensure optimal welfare. Soft substrates such as sand should be provided to create “pillows” or mounds that help adult elephants sleep comfortably, and disturbances during the main sleep hours should be avoided (for example, no feeding between midnight and 6:00AM).

The elephants’ sleep patterns teach us that sleep reflects a finely tuned interplay among physiology, environment, and behavior, with nuances that new research continues to reveal.

Hebrew editing: Smadar Raban
English editing: Elee Shimshoni

Sources and Further Reading

Review on sleep behavior in various animals

Study on elephant sleep that tracked two wild matriarchs

Study on sleep patterns of nine elephants in South Africa

Website of the Save the Elephants organization

Popular science article on the sleeping habits of elephants in Kenya as documented by camera-equipped drones

European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA) guidelines for the proper husbandry of elephants

Sleep is one of the most enigmatic behaviors in the animal kingdom.
